Price
Free entry (donations are welcome but not expected) to Te papa makes it
an attractive destination over other icons such as the zoo ($21 adult). Te papa holds guided tours which are $14 for adults
which is more expensive than the Australian National museum ($10) but cheaper
than British museum (£12). Audio Tours are also available for $5 although
there is a free Unauthorized Audio Tour by Binge Culture available
online. Te papa also holds paid exhibitions which change frequently. These
exhibitions change in price depending on the content but often have discounted
student and family rates. However it can
be off putting for locals to have to pay for new content when the free
exhibitions do not offer anything new (an example is the explosive reaction to
the new free Gallipoli exhibition). Special souvenirs are sold at these
exhibitions. The giftware in Te papa is high quality but expensive ($15 for a
tea towel). Books with information relating to the exhibitions are also
available to buy.
Promotion
Te Papa has a reputation as New Zealand’s national museum. The building
itself is an iconic Wellington landmark and is hard to miss. On travel websites
tourists can find out about Te papa and it is the #1 thing to do in Wellington
with almost 4000 reviews and a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor. There are also
many blog posts about Te papa and people’s experience of it and you can find a
Te papa brochure in the visitor center and in libraries and some shops around
the city. Te Papa promotes towards local people through media coverage (such as
with the opening of the new Gallipoli exhibition which was co-created with Weta
Workshops), and through more traditional means of promotion such as posters,
bus shelters, and back of buses. An active Facebook page with 49000likes as
well as a Twitter helps Te papa to engage with its users but could be utilized more.
Te papa has a Website however it was difficult to navigate, as well as a second
site specifically for the Gallipoli exhibition which was also difficult to find
and navigate, but had additional material which could have enhanced the
experience of the exhibition. Te papa also works with the community and holds
workshops but these are not promoted as much as new exhibitions.
